What is Assistive Technolgy and how can it help your child? Assistive Technology is any tool or program that will increase independence in daily activities.
Assistive Technology can be as simple as a pencil grip to help a child properly hold a pencil while writing. It can be as complex as an augmentative device to give a child communication abilities.
In Cannon County, many of our children use assistive technology daily to help them be successful. A simple example of an Assistive Technology device that many people use is a pair of glasses. If you wear them all the time, then you can understand how difficult it could be to do things without them. It would impair your independence.
Some people have more involved impairments which prohibit independence such as the inability to read, walk, or talk. Assistive Technology can help. If your child has a particular struggle which interferes with his/her independence, an assistive technology evaluation might offer suggestions to help your child be more successful.
If you have a concern, be sure and talk with your child's IEP team for suggestions. Every child should be able to reach his or her potential. We are here to help. For further questions about Assistive Technology, contact Alice Parker at parkera4@k12tn.net.
